An extraordinary single piece wooden carved royal elephant. The howdah is carved in the single piece with the mahout in front, the king, and his minister riding inside. Created by the extremely skilled artist Kapil Mehra who operates from his studio in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The royal excursion or hunt were popular subjects to carve in India. Now they are treasured for their historical significance. The intricate detailing of the work can only be achieved by a master craftsman who has a minimum of 10 years of work experience. If you look carefully, you will notice another baby elephant that is carved out through the holes. The wood used is the highly priced varietal called Sheesham. The artwork is designed to be viewedfrom all sides and should be displayed as such. This artwork is a story in itself as if a poem was carved out of wood. Due to the nature of the work this piece is a one off.
